These shelves begin as waste. In managed woodlands, curved and slender trees are routinely felled to give space and light to their more commercially valued neighbours. The Boeing shelves start exactly there, with the timber nobody wanted.

Each oak stave is steam-bent and shaped, but it is the discarded shelving material that leads the design. In cross-section, the staves echo the profile of an aerofoil, broad at the base, tapering to a fine tip at the top, a form discovered in nature long before aviation borrowed it. The shelves run straight and level through the lean and curve of the staves. Straight lines and curved lines. The contrast is the point. No two sets of Boeing shelves are identical, and yet each time they find a rhythm, leaning and curving like a stand of young trees.
